Licensed Professional Counselor

He/Him/His

Jimmy Hovermale is Licensed Professional Counselor who earned his master’s degree in counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. His person-centered approach stems from his experiences working in private practice as well as residential substance abuse rehabilitation. He tailors his approach to meet the individual needs and goals of each client while working together along two parallel paths. One focused on gaining awareness and understanding of self, and the other focused on learning skills to manage thoughts and emotions and improve relationships. He believes the therapeutic relationship is one between equals built on mutual trust, respect, and open feedback in both directions. Jimmy uses an emotion focused approach rooted in attachment theory along with CBT and ACT models to help individuals and couples facilitate change within themselves and their lives.

As a Counselor
I work with people who are struggling with addictions, relationships, changes in life, and emotional difficulties. My approach is gentle and non-judgmental. Together we will explore your history in order to identify any patterns that may be impacting your current situation--these can include triggers that become obstacles to change. I believe in people's ability to grow and find healing on their own terms; however I also understand the importance of having someone who can be an unbiased listener and provide unconditional positive regard.

Clinical Beliefs
I don't have all of the answers, but if we work together we can make an impact on your life and create lasting change. I listen to you without judging you or telling you what to do; instead I help you see things from different perspectives so that together we can come up with ideas for how to cope better in difficult situations.

My Goal
My goal as a counselor is not just to get through counseling sessions quickly by giving advice - it's about truly getting at the root of what's going on inside someone so that they might be able to heal.
